Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Özbey – Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Urology Specialist

Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Özbey completed his medical education at Istanbul Medical Faculty and built his academic career at the same faculty, specialising in pediatric surgery and pediatric urology. Between 1997 and 1998 he worked as a research fellow at the Department of Pediatric Surgery, Karl-Franzens University, Graz Medical School, Graz, Austria (Head: Prof. Michael Höllwarth) with an ÖAD Scholarship.

Between 2001 and 2002 he worked with Prof. Michael Höllwarth in the same department, holding an “Oberarzt” (senior physician) position provided by the Austrian Ministry of Health. Between 2004 and 2020 he served as professor at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, and between 2017 and 2020 as Chair of the Division of Pediatric Urology. Between 2018 and 2025 he was a visiting professor at Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Russia’s largest state university. Since 2009 he has seen patients at his private practice in Bakırköy, Istanbul.

He was the founder and president of the Society for Sexual Development and Hypospadias (dsdturk.org) in Türkiye. Between 2017 and 2023 the society organised the Hypospadias Study-Days, a highly standardised international meeting on hypospadias. Regarded as an authority in hypospadias and Disorders of Sex Development (DSD), he is the first surgeon to describe the septum glandis and the functional anatomy of the glanular urethra — structures overlooked throughout the history of hypospadias surgery. On this scientific basis he developed the GFC (Glanular-Frenular Collar) technique, which achieves a fully anatomical repair without glans dissection and has entered the international medical literature.

He organised four international workshops (live surgery) on his technique alongside the last three Hypospadias Study-Day meetings, and has taken part in numerous live workshops abroad as a speaker and trainer. In 2019 he was named “Pediatric Surgeon of the Year” at his former department in Graz for his surgical technique — a new concept for the anatomical correction of hypospadias.

In October 2023 he conducted a workshop on hypospadias surgery at Raparin Children’s Hospital in Erbil, Iraq, where he applied his technique. His latest work on hypospadias and penile curvature (Mechanics of multilayer flexible pipes: biomechanical insights on penis flexibility that can guide penis surgery) was presented at the European Society for Paediatric Urology (ESPU) Congress in Vienna in September 2025. His research and publications on hypospadias continue with new concepts.
